Dreaming of Oktoberfest?
My husband’s close friends recently put up on Facebook their collection of pics from their visit to Oktoberfest 2017. Although they were there a few months ago in September, they had been bragging about the fun they’d had, and now decided to put up pics to corroborate their facts. The 40 types of beer, 4000 brands of beer, the festivities and the “Biergartens” was what they had been going on about, and it didn’t seem like it was gonna stop. My husband loves his chilled Sunday afternoon beer, and everytime he spoke about those friend’s trip, I couldn’t help but feel that I must do something to give him the same experience. If I could just find some Bavarian beer, that I was sure would make a difference!
Thankfully I didn’t have to buy him air tickets to Munich! Driving him down to Kaitlyn’s Beer Garden last weekend did the trick. And this is how it unfolded. After I had told him about this place, he was super excited to go there. All the while I drove down he kept talking about what he was looking forward to.
Kaitlyn’s Beer Garden is situated on Hill road, Bandra west and is very easy to find. Overlooking a busy Mumbai street, the place has tall French windows which allow plenty of sunlight to come through, indoor bare chestnut trees and a simple wooden seating arrangement, reminiscent of what a “biergarten” would probably look like to my mind. Soft trendy music played in the background, and a sweet fruity scent of freshly brewed beer fills the place.
As soon as we took our seats, my husband was all over the menu, checking out the cool beer algorithms and even pointing out to the beer cocktails like a kid in a candy store. I loved the look in his eyes as we placed our orders, and I was really glad that I had brought him here.
What we tried out:
STOUT BEER (4.5/5) – This is classically made with roasted malt giving it a strong dark taste, and also has a higher alcohol content among other beers. I can’t make much of beer taste, but my hubby gave it a 4.5/5.
BARTENDER SPECIAL (5/5)– A special mention of the bartender Bhupendra who came up with this amazing strawberry fusion mocktail with a touch of saffron. I loved it!
FRUIT LIIT (4.5/5) – This caught my eye while on somebody else’s table. It looks like a drunk and shameless fruit salad and pretty much tastes like one too!
FRUIT PUNCH (4/5)- A mixture of different fruits , a comfort drink, and comfort it is.
GARLIC BREAD WITH BUTTER /CHEESE (3.5/5) Lacked salt but still did better than some pizza joints.
PRAWN CHETTINAD ON MINI LACHHA PARATHA (5/5) Large roasted prawns soaking in the classic Tamil Nadu Chettinad masala and well complimented by the rather bland laccha paratha which lifts the overall flavour. A spectacular dish and I would highly recommend it!
BEER BATTERED PRAWNS WITH WASABI MAYONNAISE (4/5) These lovely fried prawns are an excellent finger food and a perfect snack for prawn lovers! They paired wonderfully with our drinks. These prawns are coated in a beer batter and deep fried which makes them light, crispy & golden.
SHAOXING BBQ PORK (5/5) Just one word to sum up this dish- WOW! DEEEEEELICIOUS!
TURKISH STYLE PULLED LAMB POUTINE (4.5/5) A French-Canadian favourite with tender lamb and molten mint labneh cheese mounted on top of crispy salted fries.
OUR FAMOUS BLACK PEPPER CHICKEN (4/5) A huge chicken breast marinated in Italian herbs, grilled vegetable and olive mash. Quite filling!
TRIPLE CHOCOLATE EXPLOSION (5/5) A sinful desert, with a remarkable combination of brownie, cocktail fruits, chocolate sauce, topped with wafer biscuit.
What I liked about Kaitlyn’s:
1. The “Biergarten” look to the place.
2. Impeccable food presentation.
3. Staff are very helpful & attentive. A special mention of the Bartender Bhupendra who took the effort to prepare AMAZING mocktails based on my preference.
4. Impressive Beer options (as contributed by my better half!)
What I didn’t like about Kaitlyn’s:
1. Although the place is easy to find because it overlooks the main road, the entry to the place is a little shady and confusing as the main door has no sign to it.
2. Limited veg options.
3. Service will get a bit slow if you stagger your orders.
My Recommendations:
1) PRAWN CHETTINAD ON MINI LACHHA PARATHA
2) SHAOXING BBQ PORK
3) TRIPLE CHOCOLATE EXPLOSION
Price: Rs 1600 for two (approx.)
